Genre creative nonfiction, picture bookTopic life cycle of a pumpkin, Halloween celebrations, five sensesTheme the wonders of the senses, fun at Halloween, the continuity of lifeIllustrations The illustrations are cut paper illustrations They are bright and colorful They are highly supportive of the text and also add another dimension Use read aloud, guided reading, independent readingReading Level fluentLiterary Elements onomatopoeia, descriptive language, personificationThoughts In the spring, a small silver seed is planted in the garden By fall, it s a full grown pumpkin on a long vine The careful and accurate depiction of the development of a pumpkin from seed to sprout to flower to fruit is followed by a description of a wonderfully raucous Halloween romp so full of life and fun that the reader feels like the guest of honor The lyrical text by poet Rick Agran provides the perfect basis for Sara Anderson s clear, colorful cut paper art, also used to brilliant effect in Hey Diddle Diddle, A Felt Read And Play Book Pumpkin Shivaree brings to young readers not only solid information and the sense of a rollicking good party, but it also helps to convey the excitement that is generated over and over by Halloween, one of children s favorite holidays.Pumpkin Shivaree is an excellent book for fluent readers Transitional readers with a strong background in science may also enjoy it The text is colored words on colored backgrounds The text moves around on the pages Many of the words are multi syllable words many are also specialized vocabulary pistil, stamen, whittles, crook, tendrils There are multiple lines of text on each page.

The title doesn t make sense A shivaree is a noisy mock serenade for newlyweds Merriam Webster The text was slightly jarring in places, and certain phrases sentences don t make much sense, even with the illustrations to help Pistil and stamen Tickle of six little feet Whose feet What kids knows what a pistil and stamen are And why aren t they clearly illustrated if this is supposed to be a teaching moment I also don t think kids are going to fall for the idea that having its insides scooped out and pieces of it carved off is a fun experience for a pumpkin There are a lot of great Halloween pumpkin picture books out there, so this one can be skipped.

My daughter chose this book as the first to be read from a pile of seven I totally think she likes color and this book has a great mix of contrasting colors The story is simple, but the illustrations make it rich I picked the book for the colors as well P

I think this is a great book I love the end especially I don t care for some of pictures like the people with no faces and the one showing the pumpkin grow It was a little visually overwhelming.
